This is the story of how I went from a blank page to a syndicated comic strip. As I'm writing this first segment, Gunchello isn't actually syndicated yet. It may never be syndicated. Which brings me to the heart of the matter. Who am I to even think this could be done. Why would I invest an entire year of my life to creating a comic strip? Who do I think I am anyway? This is who I am. Jerry Seltzer. Graduated from a high school that had no art program, failed out of engineering school, got a 2 year degree in commercial art from community college and then got my 4 year degree in graphic design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. While in college I had a crappy comic strip in the local paper I called Lint Man. After college I worked a whole lot of stinky jobs in sign production, sales, managment I even started a couple businesses that failed.
All along I had been sharpening my skills, studying books on cartoons, reading cartoons, yadda yadda yadda. Eventually, at the age of 26 I became an editorial cartoonist. I still am. I actually get paid to do cartoons. Unfortunately they are the cynical, political kind of cartoons. Now, while I enjoy having my say about politics, I've always dreamed of having a successful comic strip. Finally, at the age of 27, I finally had the confidence in my abilities to try it. In the next segment I'll talk about how I got started.
