Pogo : (Walt
Kelly) CLASSIC COMIC STRIP. This is one of the
best drawn strips in existence. The strip's star is a
possum named Pogo (seen above in the red and black striped
shirt). Together with many other animals living in
Okefenokee Swamp, this strip is highly regarded for its art
and humor, both political and topical. The strip
actually started as a comic book in the early 40's. In
1948, the comic strip appeared and in 1949 it became
syndicated. "Pogo" slowly flows through a story or two
with various characters. Many times, the characters
fought while remaining the best of friends. As the
strip progressed, it became more political and topical in
nature. In many ways, this is a good history lesson.
Other times, especially in the political commentary, the
strip can make no sense if you don't know the political
figures he is spoofing. While all the characters in
"Pogo" are animals, political figures of the day were drawn
into animals (ie: Fidel Castro was a goat). Today, the
strip lives on in books.
